GoF West Steering Committee

GoF West, Inc., is managed by a Steering Committee (SC) made up of members from the various clubs which support GoF West. The purpose of the SC is to ensure that annual GoF West events are held in the Western United States or Western Canada to bring together owners and enthusiasts of T-series and earlier MG cars. The SC members are elected during a meeting at each GoF West to serve three-year terms. They select the clubs (or groups of volunteers) and chairmen who will have the responsibility of organizing each annual GoF West, then oversee the management of those events. They ensure that each event is conducted in the spirit of and according to the guidelines set forth in the "Red Book", a document which outlines everything that past events have shown is necessary for a successful GoF West. The SC conducts an Advisory Council Meeting at each GoF West, when members of participating clubs can offer comments about the current event and suggestions for future events. The SC also meets twice more each year to review progress and planning for future events, and has the financial responsibility for the corporation.

Steering Committee Member's Biographie
s

Larry Long has been an avid MG fan since he was making models of the MGTC way back when he was a young boy. However, he didn't become an MG owner until the late 1960s when he purchased a TD for $200, then spent the next 17 years restoring it. He still has that car, and has driven it to GoF West events in Bend, OR, Sun Valley, ID, Jackson Hole, WY, and several other venues a little closer--Lake Tahoe, Monterey, etc. However, he always wanted a TC, and came across one for restoration in 1992. After a shorter period of restoration time (2 years) he was driving that car to events in Oregon and Washington. Then along came a 1979 MGB which was too good a deal to pass up. The MG bug finally took hold back in Boston when he was on a business trip and saw a couple of MG J2s that had come over from England for the "Raid on New England at the eastern GoF. He states "The J2 was the neatest little car that I had ever seen, and I was convinced that if I ever came across one that I could afford, I would buy it." One came available, and he bought it and fully restored it. Now the icing on the cake was buying a 1936 MG NB; that car is currently being restored.

Larry and his wife, Barbara, have been faithful GoF West registrants since the Sun Valley venue, except for a couple of years. Larry has served as an officer of the Santa Barbara MG Club and the Paradise British Car Club (Santa Maria, CA) several times, and has served on the GoF West Steering Committee in a couple of different capacities and is currently the Chairman. He has also prepared and published the Gazette for the last 7 or 8 years and is editor and publisher of the NAMMM Register newsletter.

Larry says "My main objective as Chairman of the Steering Committee is to make sure that the By-laws of the organization are followed, and that the current GoF West Chairman is using the Red Book as a guide to provide the best GoF they can possibly provide, and a good value for the registrants as well as a friendly atmosphere with encouragement to attend other GoF west events."

George Kershaw's first encounter with an MG came during High School in Prov., R.I. when a friend's brother received a gorgeous BRG TC as an award for being accepted to Brown. I was not so fortunate and had to wait about 30 years for my dream to come true !

A buddy invited me to attend a Collector Car Auction in Newport Beach, CA in May of 1983 and all of a sudden, I spied a whitewall tire mounted on a silver rim affixed to the aft end of a little red English sports car rotating on a turntable. The vehicle was a late entry and not listed in the catalog but I knew immediately what it was. My hand shot up and didn't come down until I bought it. A couple of years later, after visiting a superb MG Restorer- Dick Maxey - my dream of owning a BRG/Tan interior MGTC was fulfilled. A TF 1500, '53 MGTD MK II, and a '67 MGB GT followed. The TD and BGT are still in our garage as my dear wife, Kevin, is now our MG driver and wasn't comfortable with the TC and I found the TD easier to access.

We attended our first GoF West in 1983 ( Long Beach, CA) at the invitation of The Vintage MG Club of Southern California which we had just joined. Soon after we also became members of the TC Motoring Guild. We quickly became enraptured with GoF Wests and our vacation plans have ever since required that we attend.

In 1988 Dave Bradley and I, with our wives, Co- Chaired the Reno/Sparks GoF West sponsored by VMG. In 1991, when it appeared there wouldn't be a GoF West, we all again jumped in and were able (with the support of VMG ) to provide another fun event, this time in Santa Barbara.

At GoF West 2001 in Napa, CA, I was first elected to the Steering Committee and was appointed Vice Chairman. In 2002 I was elected Chairman of GoF West, Inc. and continued until 2005. For the last year of my second term (2006), I opted to be Vice Chair. In 2007, Pete Thelander and I, on behalf of VMG, agreed to Co-Chair GoF West 2010 to be held in Big Bear, CA and returned to the SC in that capacity. Again, was elected Chairman and remained as such till the completion of the Big Bear GoF. At the Reno GoF West Advisory Council Meeting, was elected to another 3 year term and selected as Vice Chairman.

My terrific wife - Ann Kevin - and I have been married for 51+ years and live in Anaheim Hills, CA where we raised 3 Kids, now all married, and we have 2 wonderful grandchildren.

It has been my honor and pleasure to be again serving on the Steering Committee and I am dedicated to seeing that our fine organization keeps moving ahead.

Dave Bradley has been a member of Vintage MG of Southern California since I bought my 1950 MG TD in 1979 (which I still have). In addition I’ve owned a 1979 MGB, a 1967 MGB-GT, and a 1972 MG Midget. The TD has been to 18 GoFs (3 at more than 1,000 miles and 1 at 2,000 miles). I’m currently the Chairman of VMG (second stint) and previously served on the Steering Committee in the late 90s. After I graduated I entered the Navy in Sep 1960 and volunteered in 1967 for active duty in Vietnam and ended up running a Swift boat along the coast and rivers (we were the brown water Navy). In 1969 I left active duty and went to work for Bank of America in Long Beach (but stayed in the Navy Reserves). From the B of A (as Asst Branch Ops Mgr) I went to the City of Long Beach (and in the interim managed to get a BA, an MBA, and an MPA) and then to Xerox Corp as a IT System Mgr. Xerox outsourced its IT operations to Electronic Data System (EDS) and I was the Western Regional Mgr for the transition. While in the Navy Reserve during this period I went on several assignments to the Far East (Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand), the Middle East (Bahrain), and the UK (as an exchange officer with the Royal Air Force). I managed several other EDS operations and had the opportunity to take an early retirement in June of 1999. The Navy promptly recalled me to active duty (by this time I was a Lieutenant Commander – started as a Seaman) and sent me as the Logistics & Maintenance officer for Naval Coastal Warfare Group Two (NCWGRU2) in Williamsburg, VA. We were the Navy’s Anti-terrorism, Force Protection group and things really kicked into high gear after the Cole bombing and I did a lot of traveling all over the world supervising deployment, setup and return of assets used in battle group force protection.

I retired from the Navy in Sep of 2002 (with 42 years of Navy service) and shortly thereafter went to work for the federal Drug Enforcement Agency. I was assigned to the Riverside office and was engaged in the investigation, surveillance, arrest and prosecution of medical and pharmaceutical professionals that diverted controlled substances. I retired in Sep 2008 and now have a part time consulting business in pharmaceutical regulatory compliance.

My hobbies, in addition to MG cars are sailing & boating (duh), photography, and computers. I sail occasionally with a Swift Boat shipmate in San Diego harbor and a have a 1958 Boston Whaler Classic that I recently re-engined and got back on the water. I’m the National VP for Government Relations with the Assoc. of the U. S. Navy and on the Board of Directors for the Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument Foundation.

Ed Reynolds grew up in Weston, CT where he was a neighbor of Jim Hoe the foremost Duesenberg restorer following WWII. He gained his love of old cars riding around town in the Duesenbergs once owned by Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich and many others that Jim repaired. In addition, nearby Westport, CT was the original location of the Sports Car Club of America and also nearby was the home at the time to Briggs Cunningham. So he was thrilled to win a new 1953 MG-TD as an 18 year old freshman in college at SMU, Dallas, Texas,  in a "Why I like my Paper Mate pen in 25 words or less" contest. Ed drove the car daily, traveling through 48 states for over 20 years during his career in the USAF. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1979 he took the car to Mike O'Connor where doing a lot of the labor under Mike's direction they did a frame up restoration back to as original as possible (down to Dunlop 5.50 tires).

His first GoF West was in Palo Alto, 1985. He won the High Point Award at GoF '91 in Santa Barbara. He has shown the car in many events throughout the western US, either winning or placing in the car's class in Concours d' Elegance. Ed has been an active member of the San Francisco Peninsula MGTR and the California MG T Register and currently is a member of the Vintage MG Club and the New England MG T Register. He also belongs to several other Car clubs.

Ed was elected to the GoF West Steering Committee in 2009 and appointed the Committee Treasurer.

Mike Campbell was born and raised in Bonita, California where he still lives with his wife, Jo Lynn, having been married to her for 45 years. His interest in MG's became serious in 1979 after having attended the GoF West in San Diego that year. Since then he and his wife have acquired a 1937 MG VA, 1949 MG TC, 1951 MG TD, 1952 MG TD, 1955 MG TF 1500 and a 1952 MG Arnolt.

He has either chaired or co-chaired the GoF West events in 1986 (San Diego), 2000 (Lake San Marcos), 2004 (Harrison Hot Springs), 2008 (Monterey) and 2009 (Squaw Valley). He was first elected to the Steering Committee in 1995, later becoming Chairman in 1997. He has been on the Steering Committee since that time except for two years when he was ineligible to be on the Committee. In 1996, he authored the Guide for Prospective GoF West Event Chairpersons (now known as the "Red Book").

Dave Machovec was born in Iowa and raised in Southern Oregon. He drove his first MG TD in 1967 while working at a tire store in Medford Oregon and never forgot that experience. After a short military career, Dave enrolled at Oregon State and, in 1976, graduated with a degree in Nuclear Engineering. For the next 30 years he worked as a Shift Supervisor and Facility Manager at the Idaho National Laboratory, retiring in January, 2006. In 1981, Dave met and married Muriel, not least because she shared his love of cars.

Dave started collecting antique cars, tractors and "hit-and-miss" stationary engines in 1972 and never stopped. His first MG was a 1969 BGT which he purchased cheap as it had suffered an engine fire. He re-wired and painted it and it has been to several GoF Wests. Muriel still drives it daily in the summer. Next came a Robin's Egg Blue 1961 Magnette Mk. III which he found for sale at a Portland Swap Meet. It had always been garage-kept and had just 72,000 miles on the odometer; Muriel drove the car back to Idaho. It now has 115,000 miles and Dave often drives it to GoF West events.

He bought the pictured '53 MG TD in Howe, Idaho in 1994 and Muriel has driven it to GoF Wests ever since. Dave and his wife have attended all but one GoF West gatherings since 1988 and they really enjoyed all of them. They now spend about half their time in Idaho and half on a ranch in Southern Oregon.

Dave has been a Steering Committee member for a number of years and he and Muriel are highly regarded for their willingness to volunteer for whatever jobs need doing at these annual gatherings.

Lawrie Alexander was born in England but has lived in the US since 1968. His love of MGs began with a dilapidated PA he bought and fixed up in Wimbledon in 1961. Since then he has owned over 30 MGs and spent many years in California owning a business restoring and  servicing MGs. Now retired, Lawrie still has his "KT", a TD special he built from bits and pieces, vintage raced for a number of years, has taken to many GoF Wests, and with which he won the first two High Point Trophies when that award came into being. Also in the garage are a 1934 PA 2-seater that Lawrie has recently restored, a 1979 MGB roadster and a 1949 TC.

In 1975, Lawrie founded the Santa Barbara MG club (the Special T's) and has organized hundreds of MG club events over the years. These include co-chairing GoF West 1980 and chairing GoF West 1993, the NAMGBR national meet in 1995 and the NAMGAR national meet in 1999. A member since 1991 of the Sacramento Valley MG Car club and a club officer for most of those years, Lawrie is looking forward to the club's hosting of GoF West 2011. Chairman of the GoF West Steering Committee from 1993 through 1995, Lawrie is glad to be "back on board", helping to continue the successful tradition of GoF West events.

Kenny and Ginny Martin. MGs have almost always been a part of our life! We were married in June of 1963, and it wasn’t long before we needed a second car. Kenny said if we were going to buy another car, he wanted to find an MG. Ginny asked, “What is an MG?” By October of that year, we owned our 1953 TD MKII , and Ginny was hooked! We took turns driving it every other day, until it got too cold for Ginny, so she let Kenny drive it all winter! He drove it to work for several years, and our first little son always knew when Daddy was coming home; he knew the sound of the MG coming down our street! Kenny decided to replace the transmission, which lead to us totally disassembling the car, to “fix it right”! After 11 years of our TD sitting in pieces in our open carport, we placed monumental orders with Moss Motors and, together, restored it as our Bi-Centennial project in 1976. When nearly completed, we joined the then 1 year old Arizona MGT Roadrunner Club.

With the MG TD MKII completed, we enjoyed lots of fun events with the Roadrunners, with our three children on their knees in the little compartment behind the seats. (Way before anyone ever thought of seat belting our children!) We eventually bought a 1959 Austin Healey 3000 and redid it. Our TD is due for another restoration, but our attention and funds are going to our 1967 MGB GT for now.

We went to our first GOF in Vail, Colorado, in 1978 where, as Sherwood mentions, we met him and Jane in an elevator. Later, Kenny would serve as Chairman of the Roadrunners from 1981—1982, eventually to be followed by Ginny who served as Chairman of the Roadrunners for 8 years! During that time, Sherwood and Jane would return to Arizona where our friendship was rekindled. Sherwood followed Ginny, as Chairman of the club for 3 years.

Kenny and Ginny have been involved in the planning of 6 of the 7 Arizona Mini-GOFs, and are looking forward to working as Co-Chairs with Sherwood and Jane Parker for the 2013 GOF!

Sherwood and Jane Parker's “Wonderful, Wacky World of MGs” began during the gasoline crisis of 1974 while stationed in Germany. He reasoned, “Why would you want to buy a 911 Porsche when you could only drive it 55 mph??” MG T-types were at home at 55 mph. “Voila.” For new bride Jane it began when Sherwood asked her “how would you like to attend “25 years of MGs at Silverstone?” What Jane heard was “holiday weekend in England.” They went to Silverstone. The last leg of the trip was hitch-hiking from Oxford to the track where they received a ride from an American GI in his driver TD. Jane rode in the back like a parade queen contestant and she was hooked.

During lunch they chanced to sit with an English family. When we told them we would love to have an MG, they became rather reserved as they considered MG to be part of their National Heritage, but they marveled at what the Parkers did to get to the track for the event. Before lunch was over they decided that the Parkers were “sufficiently eccentric” to appreciate their MGs and that they would look for one for us. The Parkers met the Edneys for a second time for the big meeting in Beaulieu before returning to the USA. They kept in touch with the Edneys and in 1976 a TC was offered and the Parkers accepted. It was a brush painted, fireplug yellow TC, but it ran very well and attended its first meeting of the Texas MG T Register in 1976 with the driver’s door removed for repair. During 14 active years in the Texas club Sherwood and Jane hosted several events and were able to attended GoFs West at Vail in ‘78 and Tahoe ’80. In Vail they chanced to share the elevator with Kenny and Ginny Martin from the Arizona Roadrunners. Little did they know they would meet again.

In 1991 Sherwood and Jane returned to Arizona, promptly joined the Arizona MG “T” Roadrunners and re-acquainted with the Martins. Since then Sherwood has served as Chair of the Roadrunners for 3 years, finished the TC and is currently restoring an MG TF. With the able assistance of wife Jane they look forward to serving as Co-Chair of GoF West 2013 with Kenny and Ginny Martin and sharing a little of Arizona with those who “Maintain the Breed.”
